The moment we believe that the symbiotic connection between us and the climate is the key to healthier people and a healthier planet, is the moment we can innovate and grow our societies to flourish in the face of climate change and not to fear it. As a sustainable entrepreneur, climate designer and heat stress consultant for my company Natural Cool Air, I believe there needs to be a fundamental shift in how we think about climate control. How we interact with and utilise our different climates not as a liability but as an asset. As our climate continues to change and we are presented with new thermal challenges it is important that we develop the tools and resources to continue to enjoy environmental conditions when they are good but to be prepared to protect ourselves when they intensify and become extreme. To design for, build resilience against and connect with the climate on a deeper level instead of doubling down on old thinking with energy hungry ways of achieving thermal comfort. For me it is about putting ‘people, planet and profit 4 purpose’ first. To continuously innovate and push the boundaries of what airflow and ventilation industry is capable of and make positive changes towards addressing climate change along the way. Our great Aussie culture has been shaped by the unique climate we have here which is why I believe in thinking differently about climate control. We are the weather and if we are going to breathe clean air, live in cities that are no longer 3-12 degrees hotter than surrounding rural areas, and transform our energy production towards renewable sources, we have to design new ways for our cities to operate and understand that life is more than air conditioned space.
